        When the 6ft 4in England international central defender moved to Old Trafford from Middlesbrough in August 1989, for £2.3m, it was then a British record for a defender. He made a disjointed start to his career at Old Trafford, finding it difficult to forge a partnership with Steve Bruce.

         Gary, 1992 PFA Player of the Year, started his career at Billingham Town, but he made his reputation at Middlesbrough before being offered to neighbours Darlington for £4,000, when Boro hit financial trouble.He made his England debut while at Middlesbrough against Holland but his international career stuttered when Graham Taylor used his as a wing-back in Norway while trying to qualify for USA '94.

         Pallister's partnership with Steve Bruce has been easily the most successful in the Premiership. United have won eight major trophies with Pallister and Bruce at the heart of the defence.Now with Bruce gone, Pallister will have to forge another partnership, and he will also be trying to win back his England place, after missing out on Euro 96 because of a backinjury.
